ESFA Publishes Risk Assessment of BASF’s GM Oilseed Rape LBFLFK

NOVEMBER 5, 2025

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has published its assessment of the genetically modified (GM) herbicide-tolerant oilseed rape LBFLFK, following an application from BASF. The variety has been modified to alter its fatty acid profile (high omega-3) and confer tolerance to imidazolinone herbicide through expression of the genes AHAS(At), D12D(Ps), D4D(Pl), D4D(Tc), D5D(Tc), D5E(Ot), D6D(Ot), D6E(Tp) and O3D(Pir).

In its assessment, the GMO panel was unable to conclude on the safety of oilseed rape LBFLF with respect to potential effects on animal health and the environment, or the adequacy of the post-market environmental monitoring plan proposed by the applicant. However, the consumption of refined, bleached and deodorised (RBD) oil from oilseed rape LBFLFK at non-high temperatures was deemed safe and unrepresentative of any nutritional concern in humans under the proposed conditions of use. Post-market monitoring to confirm the expected consumption and the application of conditions of uses in humans was considered appropriate.
