Australia Approves Bayer’s MON 88701 Cotton
OCTOBER 16, 2020
The Australian Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) has issued a licence to Bayer authorising the commercial release of the genetically modified (GM) herbicide-tolerant cotton MON 88701 in Australia. The approval authorises the release of MON 88701 cotton throughout Australia, with MON 88701 cotton and products derived from it allowed to enter general commerce, including use in human food and animal feed. The MON 88701 trait confers dicamba-tolerance through the dmo (dicamba mono-oxygenase) gene, and glufosinate-tolerance through the bar (phosphinothricin N-acetyltransferase) gene. Bayer submitted the licence application for MON 88701 cotton to the OGTR earlier this year (see AgbioNews Mar 16, 2020).
