Australia Authorises Nuseed GM Canola and Mustard Field Trials

JUNE 15, 2022

Australia’s Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) has authorised Nuseed's application for licence to conduct field trials of genetically modified (GM) canola (Brassica napus) and Indian mustard (Brassica juncea) with altered oil content and herbicide tolerance. The OGTR has authorised that in each year there may be a maximum of ten trial sites of 10 hectares and ten trial sites of 5 hectares, with a maximum planting area of 150 hectares per year. After choosing 96 local government areas (LGAs) in New South Wales, Victoria, and Queensland, GM canola and Indian mustard may be grown from November 2022 to January 2028. Nuseed, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nufarm, applied for this licence last year (see AgbioNews Dec 21, 2021).
