Australia Opens Comments on GM Purple Tomato
JULY 31, 2025
Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has requested public feedback on an application to permit the use and sale of food derived from genetically modified (GM) Purple Tomato and similar lines. The GM tomato contains the Del and Ros1-N genes responsible for natural blue pigmentation from the snapdragon plant (antirrhinum majus), resulting in purple skin and flesh in the fruit once ripe. If approved, Purple Tomato would be labelled as genetically modified as under the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code; and can be sold whole and fresh, or used as an ingredient in processed food products such as pastes.
