BASF Seeks Australia and New Zealand Approval for LBFLFK Canola
MAY 30, 2022
BASF has submitted an application to Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) to allow food from canola varieties containing its LBFLFK trait. This canola variety is genetically modified to produce omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs) and for tolerance to imidazolinone herbicides, specifically imazamox. If approved, LBFLFK canola could be imported into Australia and New Zealand as refined oil or as an ingredient within a food, providing an alternative source of dietary omega-3 LC-PUFAs, which are not found in measurable levels in non-GM canola. The approval would not permit the cultivation of LBFLFK canola in Australia or New Zealand. LBFLFK has currently gained approval for cultivation in the USA and Canada.
