B.t Brinjal Adoption Sees Positive Impact
The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and the Government of Bangladesh have produced a report to estimate the impacts of B.t brinjal (eggplant / aubergine) on production systems, producer welfare, and health outcomes. Supported by the Government of Bangladesh, the US Agency for International Development (USAID), the CGIAR Research Program on Policies, Institutions, and Markets (PIM), and Cornell University, the report compared 1200 farmers, half of which utilised B.t brinjal, and concluded that the technology reduced pest infestation and pesticide use, and generated greater production and yields, as well as higher revenues and net profits. B.t brinjal was commercialised in Bangladesh in 2014 to provide resistance to fruit and shoot borer (Leucinodes orbonalis) through the expression of the Cry1Ac gene (Event EE1).
