China to Simplify GM Approval Process
NOVEMBER 15, 2021
China has proposed a series of regulatory changes to the domestic seed industry which, if implemented, would simplify the GM approval process and could accelerate the commercialisation of GM maize in the country. Under the proposed changes, a GM trait that has already been granted a biosafety certificate, integrated into an already approved hybrid, would only require a one-year production trial before receiving approval, rather than going through the full round of trials needed for new varieties. If the changes receive approval, recently approved traits (see AgbioNews Jan 11, 2021) could be commercialised by 2023.
