Crop Science Centre to Conduct Field Trials of GM Barley in UK
MARCH 28, 2022
The Crop Science Centre, a partnership between NIAB and Cambridge University, has announced that it will conduct a field trial on genetically modified barley, with planting commencing this April in the UK. This follows recent changes to the laws around the cultivation of GM and GE plants in the country (see AgbioNews 16 Mar, 2022). The trial aims to investigate the interaction of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and the plant's root system in enabling phosphorus and nitrogen uptake, and whether these interactions can be enhanced with gene editing and modification.
