The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has published an assessment of the genetically modified (GM) insect-resistant soybean MON 94637, following an application from Bayer. The variety has been modified to confer resistance to targeted lepidopteran pests through expression of the proteins Cry1A.2 and Cry1B.2. In its assessment, the GMO panel concluded that soybean MON 94637 was as safe as its conventional counterpart and the tested non-GM soybean varieties with respect to potential effects on human and animal health and the environment, and no post-market monitoring of food/feed was deemed necessary.
