EU Approves Import of New GM Crops

SEPTEMBER 1, 2021

The European Commission as announced the approval of seven new GM crops (three maize, two soybean, one oilseed rape and one cotton) for import and renewed the approval for two maize (genetic events Bt11 and MON88017 x MON810) and one oilseed rape (genetic event GT73) crop for food and animal feed.

Three GM maize varieties have been approved for import which contain the genetic events MON87427 × MON87460 × MON89034 × TC1507 × MON87411 × DAS 59122 (including combinations of two, three, four or five of the single events) TC1507 x MIR162 x MON810 x NK603 (including combinations of two of the single events) and MZIR098. The genetic event MON87427 × MON87460 × MON89034 × TC1507 × MON87411 × DAS 59122 provides resistance to both lepidopteran and coleopteran pests, tolerance to 2,4-D and glyphosate, glufosinate, in addition to drought tolerance. The genetic event TC1507 x MIR162 x MON810 x NK603 provides resistance to lepidopteran pests and tolerance to glyphosate and glufosinate. The genetic event MZIR098 provides resistance to coleopteran pests and tolerance to glufosinate.

Two GM soybean varieties have been approved for import, which contain the genetic events DAS 44406 x DAS 81419 and DAS 81419. The DAS 44406 x DAS 81419 genetic events provides resistance to lepidopteran pest and tolerance to glyphosate, glufosinate and 2,4-D, whilst DAS 81419 provides resistance to lepidopteran pests and tolerance to glufosinate.

One GM oilseed rape variety has been approved for import which contains the genetic event Ms8 x Rf3 x GT73 (including combination of GT73 with either of the other single events) which provides tolerance to glyphosate and glufosinate.

One GM Cotton variety has been approved for import which contains the genetic event GHB614 x T304-40 x GHB119 Which provides resistance to lepidopteran pests and tolerance to glyphosate and glufosinate.
