EU Approves New GM Crops for Food and Feed Uses

APRIL 11, 2022

The European Commission has announced the approval of three new GM crops for food and feed uses, excluding cultivation:

  • BASF’s GMB151 soybean. The GMB151 event confers resistance to soybean cyst nematode through the Cry14Ab-1 protein and provides HPPD herbicide tolerance through a modified 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD-4) enzyme.
  • BASF’s GHB811 cotton. The GHB811 genetic event confers tolerance to HPPD inhibiting herbicides such as isoxaflutole via the hppdPfW336-1Pa gene, and glyphosate via the 2mepsps gene.
  • Corteva’s 73496 (Optimum GLY) oilseed rape. The 73496 event confers tolerance to the herbicide glyphosate through the gat4621 gene.

In addition, the commission has renewed the authorisation of Bayer’s glyphosate-tolerant GHB614 (GlyTol) cotton. The authorisations are valid for 10 years, with any products produced from these crops to be subject to the EU’s labelling and traceability rules.
