FBN Exploring Launch of Generic Bt Corn
The Farmers Business Network (FBN) is planning to launch maize varieties in the USA containing a generic Bt trait to provide insect resistance, with market introduction expected in 2021 or beyond. Varieties containing the trait aim to control lepidopteran insect pests such as European corn borer and southwestern corn borer, as well as the suppression of corn earworm and additional insects. These varieties will be required to be planted with a 20% structured refuge area in corn growing regions of the USA, while a 50% refuge will be required in cotton growing regions. The trait has been field trialled in Arkansas, Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee but has yet to gain US EPA approval. The company states that it expects to increase its trait offerings the the future as more technology comes off-patent.
