GM Cowpea Seed Shortage in Nigeria
OCTOBER 5, 2021
Following the first planting of GM cowpea (SAMPEA 20-T) in Nigeria this year, demand for the seed has reportedly outstripped supply, leading to seed shortages. The Pod Borer Resistant (PBR) cowpea was first planted in 2021 (see AgbioNews Sep 13, 2021) following its approval in 2019 (AgbioNews Dec 19, 2019). The Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), which developed the variety at the Ahmadu Bello University, distributed the seeds to three domestic Nigerian seed companies, and some farmer cooperatives, for sale to farmers.
