The Philippine Rice Research Institute of the Department of Agriculture (DA-PhilRice) is to expand the production of Golden Rice seed ahead of its commercial introduction. This follows the approval for commercial propagation of Golden Rice last year (see AgbioNews Jul 23, 2021). Golden Rice seeds have also been distributed to selected seed growers and regional DA research and experiment centres in Ilocos Norte and Isabela. Golden Rice has been genetically modified to provide elevated levels of vitamin A and is intended to act as a method to control vitamin A deficiency as part of a complementary, food-based solution to existing nutritional interventions, such as diet diversification and oral supplementation.
