Herbicide Tolerant GM Agave Developed in Brazil
SEPTEMBER 25, 2025
Researchers at the State University of Campinas (Unicamp) have reportedly developed the first transgenic Agave (Agave sisalana) in Brazil. The Agave variety contains the event RLV19, which confers glyphosate tolerance through expression of the CP4-EPSP protein, and is currently available for licensing. Agave yields a resilient natural fibre (sisal) used primarily for the manufacture of products such as ropes, rugs, and upholstery. It is also thought to present a viable raw material for biofuel production due to the accumulation of fermentable sugars in its biomass. Approximately 94,000 hectares of Agave were cultivated in Brazil during 2023.
