Kenya Removes Ban on GM Crops
Kenya has removed its ban on genetically modified crops in an effort to improve crop yields and support food security as the country faces its worst drought in 40 years. The decision allows for the open cultivation of genetically modified crops and the importation of food crops and animal feeds produced through biotechnology, which was first prohibited in 2012. Kenya approved the cultivation of genetically modified B.t cotton in the country in 2019 (see AgbioNews Dec 20, 2019) and has since also approved trials for GM cassava (AgbioNews Jun 24, 2021) and GM maize (AgbioNews Aug 2, 2021). Earlier this year, the country published a framework designed to help facilitate the development of gene-edited research and gene-edited seed products (AgbioNews Mar 21, 2022).
