Mexico Lifts Ban on Feed and Industrial Use of GM Maize

FEBRUARY 13, 2025

The Mexican government has suspended key restrictions on GM maize following a ruling by a USMCA dispute panel. The panel found that Mexico’s restrictions, aimed at protecting native maize species and public health, violated trade commitments under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement. In response, Mexico has lifted the ban on the use of GM maize for livestock feed and industrial processing, although the country will maintain the ban on GM maize for human consumption. The original restrictions were due to concerns about the health impacts of glyphosate, a herbicide used with herbicide tolerant GM maize varieties. In 2024 the US exported $5.6 billion of maize to Mexico, the largest export market for US maize.
