Mexico Proposes Glyphosate and GM Maize Bans

DECEMBER 15, 2020

Mexico’s National Commission for Regulatory Improvement (CONAMER) have released a draft decree for the phase-out of both the herbicide glyphosate and genetically modified (GM) maize for human consumption. Under the proposed decree, glyphosate use in the country would be phased out over the next 4 years with the herbicide not to be used in any government-sponsored programs during that transition period. The decree is also reported to contain an article requiring the revocation of existing and future permits for both the cultivation and use of GM maize for human consumption, with the aim of phasing out use of GM maize for human consumption by 31 January 2024 at the latest.

For the proposal to be approved, it would require signatures from the Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources, and the Secretariats of Health, Economy, and Finance and Public Credit.
