Netherlands Re-Approves MIR604
The Netherlands Commission on Genetic Modification (COGEM) has been asked to advise on the renewal of the license for import and processing of genetically modified maize containing the genetic event MIR604. MIR604 confers resistance to select coleopteran insect pests through the expression of the mcry3A gene. The previous license was issued in 2009 for a period of 10 years. COGEM advised positively in 2005 on the import and processing of maize containing MIR604. The renewal application includes updated bioinformatic analyses, recent literature and the results of the mandatory post-market environmental monitoring carried out since 2009. As a result of the re-assessment, COGEM considers the risks of import and processing of maize line MIR604 for humans and the environment is negligible. As a food safety assessment is conducted by other agencies, COGEM with this license does not assess the risks of incidental consumption. The MIR604 genetic event was developed by Syngenta and is present in a number of the company’s proprietary maize seed products including specific Agrisure Viptera and Agrisure Duracade varieties. In addition, a number of companies have licensed the trait including Corteva, KWS and Vilmorin.
