NRGene has announced the first commercial sales of genetically modified (GM) tomato seeds carrying its High Resistance (HR) trait to Tomato Rugose Fruit Virus (ToBRFV) developed in partnership with Philoseeds. This follows pilot plots and small-scale sales launched during the 2024/25 season in Switzerland and Canada. NRGene and Philoseeds commenced mapping of ToBRFV resistance in 2022 and have since licensed the resultant HR trait to multiple companies across Europe, South Africa, and the US. Supported by DNA markers to accelerate its introduction into tomato varieties, the trait has been integrated into the product lines of various companies, including the Dutch tomato breeding company HW Seeds.
