Switzerland to Extend Moratorium on GM Crop Cultivation

DECEMBER 7, 2020

Switzerland’s government has announced its plan to extend the moratorium on the cultivation of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in agriculture for another four years after the end of 2021. In Switzerland, GMOs may only be grown for research purposes. The Swiss moratorium on the cultivation of GMOs and sale of GMO products was first introduced following an initiative in 2005 and has since been extended three times by parliament. Switzerland’s Federal Council has now submitted a draft amendment to the Genetic Engineering Act for consultation, aimed at extending the moratorium until the end of 2025. The consultation on this amendment will last until February 25, 2021.
