Tropical Melhoramento & Genética (TMG) has developed a method to identify and select soybean plants with resistance to soybean rust and has recently gained patent protection for the technology in Brazil. This follows patent approval in the USA in 2014. Through the use of molecular markers, TMG has developed a method for identifying the soybean rust resistance gene Rpp5. Soybean cultivars possessing the Rpp5 gene reportedly have a hypersensitive reaction when infected with soybean rust, creating a dark lesion that initialises necrosis in leaf tissue around the point of infection, which restricts the progression of the disease.
