UK House of Lords Approves Gene Editing Laws

MARCH 16, 2022

The second chamber of UK Parliament, the House of Lords, has approved a statutory instrument that will make it easier to conduct field trial research with plant material produced by new genetic technologies, such as gene editing, in the UK. The statutory instrument had already been approved by a clear majority in the House of Commons (see AgbioNews January 21, 2022). In practice, the instrument will remove certain technical barriers for research and development, such as processing applications, advertising and post-trial monitoring, of genetically modified plants that could have been produced by traditional breeding. It will simplify the need for the Secretary of State to give consent on an individual basis before propagating plant material is placed into the soil.
