USDA Deregulates BASF Canola and Verdeca Soybean Varieties

AUGUST 8, 2019

The USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has granted deregulated status to BASF’s LBFLFK canola and Verdeca’s HB4 soybeans. BASF’s LBFLFK canola variety is genetically modified to convert oleic acid to omega-3 fatty acids including docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid, as well as for tolerance to imazamox. BASF applied for the variety’s US deregulation status in April 2019 (see AgbioNews Apr 4, 2019). Verdeca is a joint venture between Bioceres and Arcadia Biosciences, and the company first applied for HB4’s US deregulation status in late 2017 (see AgbioNews Dec 7, 2017). The HB4 trait reportedly confers the potential for higher yields through the use of the sunflower HaHB4v gene and tolerance to the herbicide glufosinate through the Bar gene.
