USDA Deregulates ISK's GM Orchid

SEPTEMBER 5, 2025

The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has granted deregulation status to Ishihara Sangyo Kaisha’s (ISK) genetically modified (GM) Phalaenopsis orchid ISK-311NR-4, as it has been deemed not to pose an increased plant pest risk relative to non-modified varieties. The orchid has been modified to express the flavonoid 3’ 5’-hydroxylase enzyme from Asiatic dayflower (Commelina communis) responsible for delphinidin-based anthocyanin production, resulting in blue-purple flowers.
