APHIS Issues Regulatory Status Review Response for Inari Maize and Greenlab Maize
FEBRUARY 23, 2024
The USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has issued regulatory reviews for maize plants modified by Inari Agriculture and Greenlab. Inari has modified maize for higher yield, while Greenlab has modified maize to be herbicide tolerant and produce brazzein, a protein sweetener, in seeds. APHIS determined these modified plants were unlikely to pose an increased plant pest risk compared to other cultivated plants. As a result, they are not subject to regulation under 7 CFR part 340. From a plant pest risk perspective, these modified plants may be safely grown and bred in the United States.
