The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has reported a positive scientific opinion of KWS20-1 sugar beet, a genetically modified (GM) herbicide-tolerant (HT) sugar beet variety jointly developed by KWS and Bayer. The KWS20-1 event confers tolerance to glyphosate-, dicamba- and glufosinate-based herbicides by introducing the cp4 epsps, dmo and pat expression cassettes. The EFSA’s GMO Panel has concluded that KWS20-1 sugar beet is as safe as its conventional counterpart and non-GM sugar beet varieties tested, and no post-market monitoring of food/feed is considered necessary.
