EU Authorises Two GM Maize Crops for Import
The European Commission has authorised the use of two genetically modified maize crops, DP915635 and DP23211, and renewed the authorisation for another genetically modified maize crop, MON 810, for import as food and animal feed. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) issued a favourable scientific assessment concluding that these genetically modified maize are as safe as their conventional counterparts and they have gone through a comprehensive assessment procedure, ensuring a high level of protection of human, animal and environmental health.
The authorisations are valid for 10 years and any product produced from these genetically modified crops will be subject to the EU's labelling and traceability rules. The authorisation does not allow cultivation of these genetically modified maize crops in the EU.
Expanded details on these recently approved traits, as well as for approvals dating back as far as 1992, can be found on AgbioInvestor’s GM Monitor website.
