Mexico Offers to Delay GM Maize Ban Until 2025

DECEMBER 12, 2022

Mexico has reportedly offered to delay its ban on GM maize imports until 2025, with the country currently working on a proposal to modify and clarify its decree for the phase-out of both the herbicide glyphosate and GM maize. Under the current presidential decree (see AgbioNews Dec 15, 2020), glyphosate use in the country would be phased out over the next 4 years, with the herbicide not to be used in any government-sponsored programs during that transition period. The decree also contains an article requiring the revocation of existing and future permits for both the cultivation and use of GM maize for human consumption, with the aim of phasing out the use of GM maize for human consumption by 31 January 2024 at the latest.
