Pest Genome Initiative Published to Aid Pesticide Development

FEBRUARY 15, 2023

The Pest Genome Initiative (PGI), a four-year consortium of Rothamsted Research and the agriscience companies Syngenta and Bayer, have made a new database of 19 insect genomes publicly available. It includes some of the most common pest threats faced by UK farmers including wireworm, cabbage stem flea beetle and pollen beetle, as well as other globally important species, encompassing some of the most damaging pests of crops worldwide. The database includes information regarding genomic sequence as well as genetic functionality. It is hoped this information will assist efforts to develop more sustainable pest control methods, as well as help mitigate the effects of pest resistance.
