Ukraine Establishes Temporary GM Cotton Registration Procedure

JUNE 3, 2024

Ukraine has established a simplified procedure for temporary registrations of genetically modified (GM) cotton varieties, postponing requirements for state registration and obligatory variety, uniformity, and stability testing of a plant variety. Instead, applicants must submit documents certifying its rights to a plant variety, including a patent issued by a member of the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants, to the Ministry of Agricultural Policy and Food of Ukraine. The procedure is temporary, and all GM cotton varieties registered according to it will be cancelled after a new law governing the regulation of genetically modified organisms comes into force in 2026.
