USDA Publishes Draft EIS and PPRA for Bayer’s MON 87429 Maize
The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has issued its draft environmental impact statement (EIS) and draft plant pest risk assessment (PPRA) for Bayer’s herbicide-tolerant MON 87429 maize. Maize varieties containing event MON 87429 possess tolerance to the herbicides dicamba, glufosinate, 2,4-D and the aryloxyphenoxypropionate group of herbicides (‘FOPs’) through the expression of the demethylase gene, the phosphinothricin-N-acetyltransferase (pat) gene, and the ft_t gene, a modified version of the R-2,4-dichlorophenoxypropionate dioxygenase (Rdpa) gene. In addition, MON 87429 provides tissue-specific glyphosate tolerance to facilitate the production of hybrid maize seeds through the tissue-specific expression of the CP4 EPSPS protein.
