The Indonesian government is to encourage the use of GM soybean varieties in an effort to increase national food security, keep food prices stable and maintain the availability of food ingredients. Since 2018 the level of soybean production within the country has dropped significantly, with imports being cheaper than domestically produced soybean. By encouraging farmers to use GM seeds, the government hopes to increase soybean yields so that dependence on imports is reduced.
