Argentina to Begin Maize Exports to China Following GM Maize Approvals
Argentina is expected to begin exports of maize to China from July 2024 following the authorisation of two maize genetic events, MON-87411 and DAS-59122-7 (both for corn rootworm resistance), for import by China's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. The authorisations mean that Chinese importers can now obtain biosafety certificates for all maize biotechnologies cultivated in Argentina, facilitating the commencement of maize exports from Argentina to China. The countries reportedly agreed to open up a trading relationship for maize shipments into China last year; however, no shipments have been recorded due to outstanding issues regarding permits. In February 2024, China approved Argentina as a trading partner for wheat (see AgbioNews Feb 2, 2024).
