Bangladesh Releases GM Cotton Varieties for Planting

AUGUST 22, 2023

Bangladesh has released two Bt cotton varieties for planting in the 2023/24 season, having granted cultivation approval earlier this year (see AgbioNews Jun 23, 2022). The two varieties, JKCH 1947 Bt and JKCH 1950 Bt, were sourced from the Indian company JK AgriGenetics and utilise the Cry1Ac gene for the control of select lepidopteran insect pests. GM cotton represents the second GM crop to receive cultivation approval in the country, following Bt brinjal in 2013 (AgbioNews Nov 22, 2013) which was cultivated on approximately 28,000 hectares in 2022 (AgbioInvestor GM Monitor).
