Kenya Approves Trials For GM Cassava
JUNE 24, 2021
The Kenya National Biosafety (NBA) has approved the environmental release for field trials of genetically modified (GM) cassava containing event 4046. The genetic event, which confers resistance to cassava brown streak disease (CBSD), was developed by the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation (KALRO). The CBSD-resistant cassava varieties using event 4046 have been developed under regulated confined field trial conditions authorised by the NBA, and the approval paves the way for national performance trials of these varieties before registration and release to farmers. The extensive review conducted by NBA confirms that GM cassava is as safe as conventional varieties for food, feed, and the environment.
