Mexico Upholds GM Maize and Glyphosate Ban

MAY 27, 2021

A Mexican federal judge has ruled against a request by the Mexican National Farm Council that intended to freeze the Government's plan to ban genetically modified (GM) maize and the herbicide glyphosate by 2024. The ban, which was first announced at the end of 2020 (see AgbioNews Dec 15, 2020), has the potential to significantly alter trade dynamics between Mexico and the US, with the US currently exporting around 16 million tonnes of yellow maize to Mexico, the majority of which is GM maize. According to the National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT) to date, 17 legal challenges have been filed against the planned ban.
