FSANZ Proposes Approval of MZIR260 Maize for Food Uses

OCTOBER 23, 2024

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) is reviewing a proposal to allow the sale and use of food products made from genetically modified maize line MZIR260, which is resistant to lepidopteran pests. The FSANZ conducted a safety assessment and found no potential public health or safety concerns with food derived from this maize line, concluding that it is as safe as food from non-GM maize varieties. If approved, products containing MZIR260 could enter the food supply through imports of corn starch, oil, and sweeteners. The agency has opened a public consultation and will subsequently make a final decision on the approval.
