Kenya Begins GM Cotton Seed Distribution

MARCH 27, 2023

Kenya, which recently removed its ban on genetically modified crops (see AgbioNews Oct 4, 2022), has begun distributing a free stock of 15.8 tonnes of genetically modified cotton seeds to smallholder farmers operating in Nyanza and Western provinces ahead of the new growing season, which begins in April. B.t. cotton was approved for cultivation in Kenya in 2019 after the successful completion of field trials (AgbioNews Dec 20, 2019). The initiative, which is part of the government's strategy to support the domestic cotton industry, aims to improve crop yields in the country through the use of GM cotton.
